Activities of compound G2 isolated from alfalfa roots against dermatophytes

Abstract: An antimycotic agent, compound G2, isolated from alfalfa roots exhibited considerable activity against the six most common dermatophytes. MICs in agar and broth dilutions ranged from 10 to 30 ,ug/ml and from 2 to 10 ,ug/mIl, respectively. G2 was fungicidal at 5 to 22 ,ug/ml. Structure and toxicity relations are discussed. The widespread occurrence of skin, nail, and hair infections caused by dermatophytes, coupled with the limited number of available drugs effective against them, has led to a search for new ant… Show more

“…Dry meals, saponin extracts and purified saponins from different Medicago species have been found effective in vitro against human pathogenic fungi and bacteria (Polacheck et al 1986;Evron et al 1988;Houghton et al 2006;Avato et al 2006) as well as against phytopatogenic fungi (Martyniuk et al 1995a, b;Zehavi and Polacheck 1996;Saniewska et al 2001;Saniewska et al 2003;Tava and Avato 2006). Investigations on the structure-activity relationship of those saponins proved that in general bioactivity depends on the involved genin and number of sugars in the molecules .…”

“…3-O-β-D-Glucopyranoside medicagenate (1a) has been shown to be active against dermatophytes (Evron et al, 1988(Evron et al, , 1990 but no studies on other Medicago saponins have been carried out. Until the advent of treatments and diseases which resulted in the suppression or destruction of the immune response, these fungal infections were not life-threatening, but immunocompromised conditions have caused them to become serious secondary infections in diseases such as AIDS.…”
