Activity Characteristics of the East Asian Trough in CMIP5 Models

Abstract: Abstract:In this paper, the performances of 12 CMIP5 (Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5) models for simulating the climatology and interannual variability of the East Asian trough (EAT) are assessed using the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) reanalysis data and the outputs of the CMIP5 models. The multimodel ensemble (MME) successfully reproduces the spatial pattern and spatial variations in the climatology and interannual variability of the EAT but the intensity and interannual… Show more

“…We conducted the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) technique in the MedT region (25°-55°N, 0°-65°E) to extract the dominant modes and principal components (PCs) of the 500-hPa geopotential height variability of the MedT. The EOF analysis has been widely used in obtaining the dominant modes of atmospheric fields of various monsoon systems, such as the East Asian winter monsoon (Chen et al, 2014;Shi, 2021), EAT (Wang et al, 2009;Leung and Zhou, 2015;Chen et al, 2018), and MedT (Sen et al, 2019).…”

“…Before and during the lifespan of this MCS, the northeastern coastal region of China was dominated by a deep, southwestward extending trough at the middle‐to‐upper levels, which could be traced back to 1200 UTC 26 April 2015 (Figure 1a). In the colder half of the year, the coastal region of East Asian is often occupied by a deep, semipermanent trough that is commonly known as the East Asian Trough (EAT) (Chen et al, 2018; Song et al, 2016; Wang et al, 2009). At the time, Jiangsu Province was located ahead of the upper‐level trough line and at the front‐left exit region of the East Asia upper‐tropospheric jet stream (EAJS) (Figure 2a).…”

“…On the seasonal time scale, the variation of the EAT is closely related to the establishment and retreat of the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) circulation (Academia Sinica, 1957; Ye and Zhu, 1958). Whereas, the interannual variation of the EAT reflects the intensity of the EAWM (Chen et al ., 2018). Specifically, a deep EAT facilitates strong EAWM, which leads to cold anomalies over East Asia (Cui and Sun, 1999; Chen et al ., 2005; Wang et al ., 2009a; Huang et al ., 2012), a weak storm track over North Pacific (Lee et al ., 2010), and less (enhanced) precipitation over southern China (the Maritime Continent) (Wang and Chen, 2010; Wang and Feng, 2011).…”
