Activity of drimane antifeedants and related compounds against aphids, and comparative biological effects and chemical reactivity of (?)- and (+)-polygodial

Abstract: A series of natural drimanes and related synthetic compounds was tested for antifeedant activity against aphids. Polygodial and warburganal were the most active. The synthetic compounds methyl 9α-hydroxydrimenoate and 9α-hydroxydrimenal, although active against lepidopteran larvae, were inactive against aphids. Natural (-)-polygodial and the synthetic (+) isomer showed similar levels of activity as aphid antifeedants and in phytotoxicity, fish toxicity, and human taste tests, but reacted at different rates wit… Show more

“…Polygodial (45) and plagiochiline A (46) have been shown to be very strong antifeedants against aphids and the African army worm Spooptera exempta [3] [44]. A new type of sesquiterpene, hodgsonox (47), was documented as a feeding deterrent for larvae of the blowfly Lucilia cuprina with a LC 50 value 0.27 mg/ml [45].…”

“…Diterpenoids with labdanic structures are a very important natural source of hydrocarbon skeletons which have been used in the elaboration of a great number of drimane compounds with remarkable biological properties, among which their olfactory [1][2][3], antifeedant [4], antimicrobial, cytotoxic [5], growth regulator [6], herbicidal and insecticidal activities [7][8][9][10] may be mentioned.…”

“…Polygodial (1) is fungitoxic against Cladosporium sphaerospermum [8]. In addition, it inhibits aphid feeding and colonization, as well as transmission of some plant viruses [9]. It also displays antifeedant activity against a number of Lepidopteran species, including the armyworms Spodoptera littoralis and S. exempta [10] [11].…”
