Activity of Medicinal Plants, Used by Native Populations from Sonora, Mexico, Against Enteropathogenic Bacteria

Abstract: Antibacterial activities of methanol and hexane extracts of thirty plants, traditionally used to cure gastrointestinal diseases by six native groups living in Sonora, Mexico, were evaluated against four enteropathogenic bacteria: Salmonella typhimorium (ATCC14028), Shigella flexneri (ATCC 12022), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), Escherichia coli (ATCC 35218). The antimicrobial activity was determined using the standard Disk Diffusion Method (DDM) protocol, and assessed by the presence or absence of inhibition zo… Show more

“…This plant, commonly known by the name of cosahui, is widely used by ethnic groups in northwestern Mexico, for the treatment of various gastrointestinal diseases such as diarrhea and stomach and intestinal cancer [35]. Antioxidants derived from plant extracts have been shown to have multiple biological activities including vasodilatatory, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antiproliferative, and antimicrobial effects [16,36,37].…”

“…[20]. Leaves of Atriplex canescens are used to cure infections of gastrointestinal in Mexico and its methanolic extract show anti-bacterial activity against E.coli and Salmonella typhimurium [21]. In Pakistan, the leaves of Atriplex crossifolia are used in the treatment of yellow jaundice and throat infection [22].…”

“…Hymenoclea monogyra seems to be the least documented; however, different species of the genus have shown antimicrobial properties due to the presence of flavonoids and sesquiterpene lactones. H. monogyra has been reported against enteropathogenic bacteria in BCS and in other regions of northwest Mexico (25). A diversity of active compounds can be extracted from medicinal plants using ethanol-water methods, which makes it an interesting model for the semi-pilot scale extractions, providing confidence for the optimization processes in the formulation of botanical fungicides.…”
