Acupuncture and pharmacopuncture are as effective as morphine or carprofen for postoperative analgesia in bitches undergoing ovariohysterectomy

Abstract: PURPOSE:To investigate the analgesic effect of acupuncture (AP) or micro-dose pharmacopuncture (PA), using carprofen or morphine, in bitches undergoing ovariohysterectomy (OHE). METHODS:Thirty five dogs were randomly assigned to five groups after sedation with acepromazine IM: AP, 0.5 mg.kg -1 of morphine subcutaneously (SC), 4 mg.kg -1 of carprofen SC, and PA with 0.05 mg.kg -1 of morphine or 0.4 mg.kg -1 of carprofen. “…In cats undergoing ovariohysterectomy, bilateral laserpuncture at Stomach 36 and Spleen 6 reduced the postoperative analgesic requirements compared to the control group, which received no acupuncture [ 8 ]. In dogs, acupuncture performed at the same acupoints use here, abated pain after ovariohysterectomy as effectively as NSAIDs and morphine [ 7 ]. In two studies in cats undergoing ovariohysterectomy, laserpuncture, using the same settings, except for 3 J.cm-2, for 9 s at Stomach 36 and Spleen 6 acupoints, reduced postoperative analgesic requirements [ 8 , 10 ].…”

“…Various techniques may be used to replace or complement the effect of dry needle acupuncture. The main techniques are electroacupuncture [ 6 ], pharmacopuncture [ 7 ], and laserpuncture [ 8 ]. Laserpuncture consists of using a light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation (LASER) to stimulate acupoints.…”

“…In addition to traditional pharmacological treatment, other therapies have proven effective in controlling postoperative pain in canine patients submitted to OVH, including acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, and electroacupuncture (gROPPETTI et al, 2011;CASSU et al, 2012;LUNA et al, 2015). In humans, another complementary therapy called Reiki has proven effective in reducing postoperative pain in women undergoing cesarean section (MIDILLI & ESER, 2015;MIDILLI & gUNDUZOgLU, 2016).…”
