Acupuncture Mechanism and Redox Equilibrium

Abstract: Oxidative stress participates in the pathological process of various diseases. Acupuncture is a component of the health care system in China that can be traced back for at least 3000 years. Recently, increased evidences indicate that acupuncture stimulation could reduce oxidative damage in organisms under pathological state, but the exact mechanism remains unclear. This review focuses on the emerging links between acupuncture and redox modulation in various disorders, such as vascular dementia, Parkinson's dis… Show more

“…[ 21 ] In recent years, it has been found that scalp acupuncture has a great effect on increasing the blood supply of cerebral cortex, increasing the metabolic level of brain cells, activating potential neurons, promoting the formation of synapses of brain cells. [ 22 ] Moreover, scalp acupuncture is simple, safe and effective. Although the advantages of scalp acupuncture in the treatment of VD are obvious, there is still no systematic review in English at present.…”

“…In turn, the antioxidative treatment can reduce the elevated BP but has no effect on the BP of healthy rats; this proves that oxidative stress is considered a mechanism for hypertension [ 26 ]. Antioxidative treatment is essential for hypertension, as it can reduce the formation of ROS, regulate the oxidation/antioxidant enzyme system [ 27 ], and improve the body's antioxidant defense capabilities [ 28 ]. Overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) has been proven to be essential in the pathogenesis of hypertension [ 29 ].…”

“…Through redox system, antioxidant system, anti-inflammatory system, and nervous system, acupuncture could make the oxidative damage and the antioxidant defence remain in a relatively constant redox state. However, the recent acupuncture researches about oxidative stress are sporadic and preliminary [ 21 ].…”
