Acute Hypobaric-Hypoxia Challenge and Salivary Cortisol and DHEA-S in Healthy Male Subjects

Abstract: In spite of having experienced a psycho-physical stress, the AVs did not show any dysregulation of the diurnal fluctuations of cortisol and DHEA-S, thus presenting a good level of stress resilience. Data presented in this paper are consistent with recent literature suggesting a stress-buffering role of DHEA-S.

“…[55][56][57] In addition, the HPA axis and ANS activities were studied by monitoring changes in the salivary biomarker daily trajectories and by calculating the AUC of their diurnal production, a more reliable approach than isolated single point sampling. 12,31,58 OSA children exhibit higher diurnal salivary cortisol production both in the morning and evening. These findings are consistent with sustained hyperactivation of the HPA axis in OSA children.…”

“…Of note, salivary sampling strategies were stringently followed in the present study to prevent any of the typical confounders potentially associated salivary biomarker measurements . “…Our animal model shows endogenous GC (corticosterone) response alleviates DHx effect (Figure 3). Hypoxia also increases GC (cortisol) in humans [49, 50]. If increased cortisol acts similarly, GC administration against hypoxia may be reasonable.…”

“…Cortisol is one of the main glucocorticoids, produced in the adrenal gland cortex, and has a wide metabolic effect [ 21 , 22 , 23 ]. Some studies show cortisol rises after hypoxic exposure [ 24 , 25 ], although on the other hand, there are some studies showing no effect after such exposure [ 26 , 27 ].…”
