Background: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a disease caused by a mutation of lymphoid progenitor cells in bone marrow, that induces uncontrolled lymphoid cell proliferation. ALL is the most common type of leukemia in children. Various clinical and laboratory manifestation makes the diagnostic process more complicated. This study aimed to observe the clinical and laboratory manifestation of children with ALL in Dr. Hasan Sadikin General Hospital for diagnostic and assessment. Methods: The design of this study was a descriptive cross-sectional with a total sampling method. Data of all children under 18 years old with ALL diagnosed in 2015 to 2017 were included. The diagnosis of ALL was confirmed by examination of hematology indices, peripheral blood smear, and bone marrow aspiration classified by FAB. Inaccessible or incomplete medical records were excluded. Results: In total, 192 data of ALL patients were included. Most ALL patients predominantly occurred in boys (59.9%), and the age group of 1-5 years old (40.6%). The clinical manifestations were pallor (89.6%), hepatomegaly (79.7%) and fever (75%). Most patients experienced severe anemia with hemoglobin level <7g/dL (44.8%), leukocytosis >20.000 cells/mm3 (46.9%), severe thrombocytopenia with platelet count <20.000 cells/mm3 (51%), and blast cells count >50% (45.3%). Based on FAB classification, the majority of the patients were classified as ALL type L2 (65.6%). Conclusions: Clinical and laboratory manifestation of ALL patients can be used as a parameter for diagnostic and assessment of severity. Earlier diagnosis would result in better prognosis and more precise treatment for ALL patients.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia is the most frequent cancer in children: it represents 80% of leukemias and about 24% of all neoplasms diagnosed between 0 and 14 years. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia mainly affects children between 2 and 5 years old and in this age group the incidence is about 80-90 cases per million per year. In acute lymphoblastic leukemia, cancer cells multiply rapidly and accumulate in the bone marrow and subsequently invade the blood. However, at the time of diagnosis, leukemia rarely occurs outside the bone marrow or blood vessels and the extramedullary involvement happens mostly in patients with refractory or relapsing disease. In this article, we report an unusual clinical presentation of acute B cell lymphoblastic leukemia with intestinal and ovarian localizations in a 5-year-old girl.

Natural products frequently exert pharmacological activities. The present review gives an overview of the ethnobotany, phytochemistry and pharmacology of the Cedrus genus, e.g. cytotoxic, spasmolytic immunomodulatory, antiallergic, anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities. Cancer patients frequently seek remedies from traditional medicinal plants that are believed to exert less side effects than conventional therapy with synthetic drugs. A long-lasting goal of anti-cancer and anti-microbial therapy research is to find compounds with reduced side effects compared to currently approved drugs. In this respect, Cedrus species might be of interest. The essential oil isolated from Cedrus libani leaves may bear potential for drug development due to its high concentrations of germacrene D and β-caryophyllene. The essential oils from Cedrus species also show bioactivity against bacteria and viruses. More preclinical analyses (e.g. in vivo experiments) as well as clinical trials are required to evaluate the potential of essential oils from Cedrus species for drug development.
