Acute Urinary Retention in the First-trimester of Pregnancy: A Case Report

Abstract

Acute urinary retention (AUR) is a rare occurrence during pregnancy. If not dealt with in time, it can lead to bladder rupture, miscarriage, or even uterine rupture and other serious consequences that endanger the health of both mother and fetus. Many risk factors have been identified. To better understand the etiology and treatment of urinary retention during pregnancy, we report on one pregnant woman with AUR who presented at 11+1 weeks of gestation due to uterus retroversion.

“…Both conservative methods and more intrusive interventions can be used to treat AUR caused by a retroverted uterus. High-risk patients should avoid the Valsalva maneuver, employ a Crede technique to start or maintain voiding, and adopt the knee-chest position before going to bed, changing from the supine to the prone position before getting up [7]. Bladder decompression techniques include hand reduction or implantation of an indwelling Foley catheter.…”

A drowning abdomen-a case report on acute urinary retention due to retroverted gravid uterus

“…2 It usually occurs between 10 to 16 weeks of gestation. 3 Various etiological factors causing urinary retention during pregnancy are retroverted gravid uterus, incarcerated uteri, lumbar disc herniation, paraurethral abscess, breech presentation, ectopic pregnancy, uterine malformations, intramural fibroids and endometriosis. 4,5 Main pathophysiology behind this is, in above mentioned etiological factors uterus will get trapped within the pelvis, preventing it to ascend into abdominal cavity.…”
