Ad Libitum Water Intake by Neonatal Calves and Its Relationship to Calf Starter Intake, Weight Gain, Feces Score, and Season

Abstract: Water intakes and other experimental data over 3 yr encompassing 335 calves raised under an early weaning program at the Purina Research Farm were summarized. Water intake closely paralleled calf starter intake particularly during the last 2 wk of the 4-wk feeding period. Calves with weight gains below the median daily gain of 272 g had reduced water and starter intake. Scouring, due apparently to rotavirus infection, peaked at the end of the 1st wk. Water intake did not change appreciably prior to or after pe… Show more

“…The supply of water to newborns is important since the first weeks of life because it is highly related to the concentrate intake (Kertz et al, 1984). The concentrate is offered to animals from the first day of life for 33%, from the fifth day of life for 38%, and only from the fifteenth day for 19% of the properties.…”

“…Concentrate was offered from the first day in 40% of the properties and from the second to the fifteenth day in the others. The early water supply is important because it affects the initial consumption of concentrate (KERTZ et al, 1984). On the other hand, the consumption of concentrate as early as possible stimulates rumen development and enables early weaning of calves (QUIGLEY et al, 1991).…”

“…Water, always an essential nutrient, is most important for calves living outside their critical temperature range, being fed a diet high in total milk solids or when they are scouring (Kertz et al, 1984 ). The water requirement, even at birth, cannot be provided solely through the liquid feed.…”

“…Calves provided water between feedings may be less likely to leave warm bedding to drink water and therefore drink less. At all temperatures, water intake promotes starter intake (Kertz et al, 1984 ). in individual pens, lower calf density in group pens, and increase time between successive occupants of individual and group pens to improve infectious disease control.…”
