This study investigated the maternal experience of the separation-individuation process in the fi rst year of life. In particular, it aimed to investigate the particularities of this process when the infant attends or does not attend daycare, based on reports of the mothers. A multiple case study was conducted involving six mothers and their infants, among whom three attended daycare and three did not. The mothers were interviewed when their children were 6 and 12 months of age. The qualitative content analysis of the maternal reports revealed that the infants experienced the separation-individuation process, as described by Mahler, Pine, and Bergman (1975/1977), regardless of whether they attended daycare or not. The mothers reported differences in the feelings regarding their separation from the child, which revealed more suffering among those whose infants did not attend daycare. The results suggested that the separation-individuation process is an important intrapsychic phenomenon, both for the infant and for the mother, and was occurring as expected in the cases investigated, regardless of whether the infant attended daycare or not.

O presente estudo buscou compreender a percepção das mães e dos pais sobre o choro dos bebês no contexto de adaptação à creche. Participaram do estudo dez mães e dois pais e a idade dos bebês variou de dois meses e meio a quinze meses. A partir de análise de conteúdo qualitativa, os resultados apontaram uma preocupação quanto ao choro, considerando-o, às vezes, como uma dificuldade no processo de adaptação. A discussão salientou a naturalidade dessa reação manifestada pela criança durante esse momento, ressaltando-se a importância de se compreender o choro como uma forma de comunicação. É preciso observar outros aspectos ao refletir sobre como esse momento está sendo sentido pelo bebê, visto que a ausência do choro não garante o bem-estar. Dessa forma, compreende-se que o processo de adaptação contempla a tríade: criança, família e escola. Além disso, o choro pode estar relacionado aos diversos sentimentos vivenciados pelos envolvidos e a partir das relações estabelecidas entre eles.

For many children, daycare is the first regular experience of receiving non-maternal care, so that special attention should be paid to the adjustment period. This study's objective was to investigate, from the mothers' perspectives, the aspects that facilitated or did not facilitate the adjustment of six-month-old babies to daycare. Twenty mothers participated in this study. They were interviewed one month after their babies started attending a daycare facility. The answers were examined using qualitative content analysis. The factors that potentially facilitated adjustment included: the mothers' peace of mind; the babies' individual characteristics; and the caregivers' qualification. Aspects that did not facilitate adjustment were insecurity on the part of mothers and if the babies became ill. The results reveal how complex adjustment of six-month-old babies to daycare can be, as aspects concerning child development, the relationship established between mother and infant and between caregiver and infant, as well as the dynamics of the daycare center itself, are involved.Keywords: daycare adjustment, child day care center, childhood development Adaptação de Bebês à Creche: Aspectos que Facilitam ou não esse PeríodoResumo: A creche representa a primeira experiência regular de cuidado não materno para muitas crianças, de modo que especial atenção deve ser dirigida ao período de adaptação. O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar, a partir do relato materno, os aspectos que facilitaram ou não a adaptação de bebês à creche aos seis meses de idade. Participaram 20 mães que foram entrevistadas um mês após o início da adaptação dos filhos à creche. As respostas foram examinadas através de análise de conteúdo qualitativa. Como possíveis facilitadores da adaptação foram ressaltados a tranquilidade materna, aspectos individuais dos bebês e a qualificação profissional das educadoras. Quanto aos aspectos não facilitadores foram ressaltados o sentimento de insegurança materna, bem como o adoecimento do bebê. Salienta-se para a complexidade da adaptação à creche aos seis meses de idade por envolver aspectos específicos do desenvolvimento do bebê, da relação mãe-bebê e educadora-bebê e da dinâmica da creche.
