Adaptation to European Spanish and psychometric properties of the Patient Activation Measure 13 in patients with chronic diseases

Abstract: The European Spanish PAM-13 is a reliable and valid instrument for assessing activation in patients with chronic disease in Spain. We suggest adding new items to the instrument so as to examine patients with higher activation levels in the future. Further studies are needed to evaluate the usefulness of this new Spanish PAM-13 in different settings and populations, as well as to examine the relationship between PAM-13 scores and other health-related outcomes.

“…Items are sequenced and scaled by "difficulty" of activation, with higher scores indicating greater activation. The PAM has been translated and validated in many countries [29][30][31][32][33][34], and across multiple populations including mental health [35,36], elective lumbar spine surgery [37], multi-morbid older adults [37], hospitalized patients [38], and rural populations [39]. Overall these studies provide evidence that the PAM is uni-dimensional, with good reliability and construct validity.…”

“…Overall these studies provide evidence that the PAM is uni-dimensional, with good reliability and construct validity. There is, however, evidence of variation in differential item scaling across populations [32,40].…”

“…The PAM13 assesses a patient's self-reported knowledge, skills and self-management confidence regarding CDs, 14 as well as patients' knowledge of how to manage their disease and identify disease symptoms. 15 The PAM13 defines four stages of activation. Level 1 describes patients who believe their role is important.…”

“…The Spanish translated version has been validated in patients with chronic diseases and has demonstrated a similar behaviour to the original instrument with good validity and reliability properties. 24 It has been used in previous studies by this research team. 25…”
