Adaptive and Beacon-based multi-channel protocol for Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract: This paper proposes a novel protocol for Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks (IWSN), which is called Adaptive and Beacon-based Multi-Channel Protocol (ABMP), and combines multi-channel communication, real-time link quality estimation, and dynamic channel allocation, to deal with the problems that affect the link quality in industrial environments. A hybrid channel diversity mechanism is employed, in which the beacon trames are transmitted using channel hopping, and the unicast data packets are transmitted usin… Show more

“…The works in [27] and [26] proposed the use of time synchronization and channel hopping (i.e., sending subsequent packets over different frequency channels) at the physical layer as a means to combat both multipath propagation and external interference. The protocol proposed in [9] combines multi-channel communication, real-time link quality estimation, and dynamic channel allocation, to deal with the problems that affect the link quality in industrial environments.…”

“…As for wireless only networking, to avoid common problems of communication in industrial environments, a various methods of network self-adaptation are used as frequency hopping, adaptive routing, multichannel transmission, or dynamic channel allocation (e.g., RPL, TSCH) [17,18] as well as some based on them standardized protocols as IEEE802.11, ZigBee, WirelessHART and the ISA100.11a [19], IEEE802.15.4 [20]. The interesting solution of the multichannel protocol and communication is proposed in [21]. Authors using channel hopping and channel adaptation mutually to improve the network performance and link quality.…”
