Adaptive Cascade Control of a Brake-By-Wire Actuator for Sport Motorcycles

Abstract: In this paper, a cascade control architecture for a brake-by-wire system suitable for motor racing applications is described. The system is composed of an electromechanical actuator, i.e., an electric motor, a transmission, a master cylinder, and a traditional hydraulic brake (pipe and caliper). Starting from a control-oriented model, a cascade control is proposed. An inner-loop controls the position; an outer the pressure. The outer loop features an adaptation mechanism to cope with the intrinsic time-varying… Show more

“…After the motor torque is amplified by the gear mechanism, it is converted into axial force by the ball screw mechanism, and then the force pressurizes the brake fluid in the master cylinder. Finally, the pressure is transmitted to the wheel cylinder through the high pressure pipeline [34][35][36]. 2.1.4.…”

“…For indirect estimation, the caliper force is usually estimated from the piston position. In order to accurately estimate the caliper force, Todeschini designed a "position-pressure switching controller" to address the highly non-linearity between the piston position and hydraulic pressure [34], and adopted an adaptive algorithm to reduce the estimation error that is caused by temperature changes and friction plate wear [35]. There are also literatures that use estimation algorithms to estimate the hydraulic pressure change rate that cannot be indirectly measured and provide more feedback variables to the controller [46].…”

“…Especially, among the causes of vehicle and safety device accidents, the brake system represents a significantly large proportion. Thus, the importance of "brake by wire" technology [1][2][3], an electronic brake system which is combined with functions such as an antilock braking system (ABS), traction control system (TCS) and electronic stability program (ESP) is emphasized. Also, its study is consistently evolving.…”
