Adaptive Coded Modulation for IM/DD Free-Space Optical Backhauling: A Probabilistic Shaping Approach

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a practical adaptive coding modulation scheme to approach the capacity of free-space optical (FSO) channels with intensity modulation/direct detection based on probabilistic shaping. The encoder efficiently adapts the transmission rate to the signal-to-noise ratio, accounting for the fading induced by the atmospheric turbulence. The transponder can support an arbitrarily large number of transmission modes using a low complexity channel encoder with a small set of supported rates. Henc… Show more

“…The FSO system primarily use intensity modulation/direct detection (IM/DD). While the information is encoded in changes of the light intensity, a square-low detection is typically used in decoding process [31]. The most optical technique for IM/DD system is on-off keying (OOK) [32].…”

“…Specifically, ACM can achieve a good compromise between capacity and reliability by adapting parameters to the channel condition 3 and has been applied in the cellular communication systems, 4 satellite broadcasting systems, [5][6][7] and optical communication networks. 8,9 However, traditional ACM usually needs amount of hardware and software resources to implement multiple codes and modems with different rates and different orders separately, and then select a certain combination of them to complete the communication according to the perception and decision of the channel environment. Interference suppression is mainly utilized in the spread spectrum communication system and Ultra-Wide Band system to combat the narrowband interference.…”

“…Probabilistic amplitude shaping is another concept that can only be used for symmetric constellation with coherent modulation, which greatly limits its application [56]. For FSO, a practical and capacity achieving PS scheme with adaptive coding modulation is proposed with intensity modulation/direct detection [57].…”
