Adaptive finite element method in nanophotonic simulations

Abstract: The problem of constructing nanophotonic structures of arbitrary geometry with prescribed properties was studied using an adaptive optimization algorithm. Stability estimates for the forward and adjoint problems involved in this algorithm are presented. A numerical example illustrates the construction of nanostructure in two dimensions.
