Adaptive rehabilitation gaming system: On-line individualization of stroke rehabilitation

Abstract: The effects of stroke differ considerably in degree and symptoms for different patients. It has been shown that specific, individualized and varied therapy favors recovery. The Rehabilitation Gaming System (RGS) is a Virtual Reality (VR) based rehabilitation system designed following these principles. We have developed two algorithms to control the level of task difficulty that a user of the RGS is exposed to, as well as providing controlled variation in the therapy. In this paper, we compare the two algorithm… Show more

“…This proposal reflects the fundamental consideration that specific cognitive abilities are constituent aspects of cognition rather than isolated domains or, in other words, processes that are critically linked in the overall architecture of the brain [58]. The implementation of these scenarios includes a mechanism that adapts the difficulty automatically to the patient's capabilities using machine learning techniques [59], thereby addressing unique profiles of impairments and skills in a heterogeneous group of stroke patients. The algorithm adapts several task parameters, which reflect cognitive abilities, to the performance of the patient and hence adjusts the task's difficulty automatically.…”

“…The principle of embodied ideomotor training is integrated into a range of goal-oriented tasks, exercising different aspects of motor and cognitive function that have been shown to enhance retention of new motor schema inducing more substantial treatment effects (Timmermans et al, 2010). RGS individualizes training, where each trial of each session is customized to the capabilities of the user and the specific training objectives using machine-learning techniques (Nirme et al, 2011). The task considered here, Spheroids, consists in reaching, grasping, and releasing spheres into color-matched boxes (Cameirão et al, 2010).…”

“…Here we report the results on the CAHAI, Fugl-Meyer and Hamilton scales [5]. Within-subject comparisons were made using Friedman tests and post-hoc Wilcoxon signed-rank tests to evaluate differences with the baseline.…”
