Adding automatic evaluation to interactive virtual labs

Abstract: Automatic evaluation is a challenging field that has been addressed by the academic community in order to reduce the assessment workload. In this work we present a new element for the authoring tool Easy Java Simulations (EJS). This element, which is named automatic evaluation element (AEE), provides automatic evaluation to virtual and remote laboratories built with EJS by using the server application Goodle grading management system (GMS). The integration of both tools entitles a professor to create interacti… Show more

“…This PARES new module uses a conflict detection algorithm based on a vector space model to estimate the similarity between questions, thus allowing the exclusion of questions which appear to have an unacceptably large similarity from other questions appearing in the same test suite. Besides, Farias et al (2016) show a new module for the authoring tool Easy Java Simulations (EJS) which allows automatic evaluation to virtual and remote laboratories built with EJS, allowing instructors to create interactive, remote laboratories and automatically evaluate the work of their students.…”

Moreover there are a lot of institutions around the world that build systems for implementing assessment on the provided knowledge and learning outcomes (see Tsinakos et al (2012Tsinakos et al ( ,2012, Farias et al(2016Farias et al( ,2016 , and Ruano et al( 2007Ruano et al( , 2007 ) . There is a vast bibliography of related research work (see Rjaibi et al (2012), Younis et al (2013), Chen et al (2013), Kritzinger and Solms (2006), Mohd and Fan(2010), Saxena (2004), Yong (2007), Trek (2003, Reddy (2013), Whitson (2003) and Yand and Lin (2002)) including various suggestions regarding security tools in order to resolve certain security issues; however, it is not presented any unifying secure model focusing on a particular use case and including competence online evaluation.…”
