Addition of pomegranate juice (Punica granatum) in tris‐based extender improves post‐thaw quality, motion dynamics and in vivo fertility of Nili Ravi buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) bull spermatozoa

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to determine the protective effects of pomegranate juice in tris‐based extender on semen parameters, computer‐assisted sperm analysis (CASA) motion characteristics and field fertility of post‐thawed Nili Ravi buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) bull spermatozoa. Two consecutive ejaculates/collection from each of the five adult Nili Ravi buffalo bulls were collected with artificial vagina at 42°C for a period of 7 weeks, diluted in extender containing different concentrations of pomegrana… Show more

“…All the buffaloes under study were inseminated on the basis of oestrus signs (24 h after the onset of oestrus signs). The inseminated buffaloes were rectally examined for pregnancy after 60-90 days (Javed et al, 2019;Naz et al, 2018Naz et al, , 2019.…”

“…In the recent past, the use of herbal natural products and their extract having antioxidant properties have gained great interest as natural additives in semen extenders worldwide (Awan et al, 2018;El-Khawagah et al, 2020;Hussain et al, 2019Hussain et al, , 2020Javed et al, 2019). It has been reported that phenolic compounds, vitamins and minerals present in Moringa olifera have synergistic antioxidant effect to reduce the ROS based stress to spermatozoa during cryopreservation (Mehta et al, 2011).…”

“…This herbal and medicinal plant material includes phytochemicals, polyphenols, flavanone and proteins, which act as the stabilising, reducing agents as well as the tapping agents [16]. Recent reports also proposed that the biosynthesis of Ag, Au and Ag–Au nano‐bimetallic particles from blackberry, blueberry, pomegranate and turmeric extracts [17], Selaginella [18]; Phlogacanthus thyrsiformis Hardow [19], juice of cola nitida [20], garlic, green tea and turmeric extracts [21]. The synthesised NMPs of Au, Ag and Pt are widely utilised as a part of bio‐medicinal and pharmaceutical applications [22], in catalytic activity [23], anti‐bacterial, antiviral agents [9], biomedical utilities as anticoagulant, thrombolytic and sensor applications [24] and DNA cleavage application [25, 26].…”
