The chemical defence of the millipede Pachyiulus hungaricus is reported in the present paper, in which a chemical characterization is given and antimicrobial activity is determined. In total, independently of sex, 44 compounds were identified. All compounds belong to two groups: quinones and pentyl and hexyl esters of long-chain fatty acids. The relative abundances of quinones and non-quinones were 94.7% vs. 5.3% (males) and 87.3% vs. 12.7% (females), respectively. The two dominant quinones in both sexes were 2-methyl-1,4,-benzoquinone and 2-methoxy-3-methyl-1,4-benzoquinone. Antibacterial and antifungal activity of the defensive secretion was evaluated in vitro against seven bacterial strains and eight fungal species. With the aid of a dilution technique, the antimicrobial potential of the secretion and high sensitivity of all tested strains were confirmed. The lowest minimum concentrations of these compounds (0.20–0.25 mg/mL) were sufficient for inhibition of Aeromonas hydrophila, Listeria monocytogenes and Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The growth of eight tested fungal species was inhibited by slightly lower concentrations of the secretion, with Fusarium equiseti as the most sensitive fungus and Aspergillus flavus as the most resistant. Values of MIC and MFC in the employed microdilution assay ranged from 0.10 to above 0.35 mg/mL. The given extract contains antimicrobial components potentially useful as therapeutic agents in the pharmaceutical and agricultural industries.

Biocontrol using plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) represents an alternative approach to disease management, since PGPR are known to promote growth and reduce diseases in various crops. Among the different PGPR, members of the genus Bacillus are prefered for most biotechnological uses due to their capability to form extremely resistant spores and produce a wide variety of metabolites with antimicrobial activity. The objective of this research was to identify antagonistic bacteria for management of the plant diseases. Eleven isolates of Bacillus spp. were obtained from the soil samples collected from different localities in the Province of Vojvodina. The antifungal activity of bacterial isolates against five fungal species was examined using a dual plate assay. Bacillus isolates exhibited the highest antifungal activity against Fusarium proliferatum, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cepae and Alternaria padwickii, while they had the least antagonistic effect on Fusarium verticillioides and Fusarium graminearum. Molecular identification showed that effective bacterial isolates were identified as Bacillus safensis (B2), Bacillus pumilus (B3, B11), Bacillus subtilis (B5, B7) and Bacillus megaterium (B8, B9). The highest antagonistic activity was exhibited by isolates B5 (from 39% to 62% reduction in fungal growth) and B7 (from 40% to 71% reduction in fungal growth). These isolates of B. subtilis could be used as potential biocontrol agents of plant diseases.

IZVODBolesti biljaka izazvane infekcijama patogenim gljivama mogu dovesti do smanjenja kapaciteta biljnog rasta ili naneti mnogo ozbiljniju štetu dovodeći do smrti biljaka i značajnih gubitaka u proizvodnji hrane. Veliki broj istraživanja je u poslednje vreme posvećen proučavanju sekundarnih metabolita koje proizvode vrste roda Bacillusa koji se mogu koristiti za kontrolu različitih biljnih patogena. U ovoj studiji prikazan je jak antifungalni efekat lipopeptidnih ekstrakata iz izolata roda Bacillus prema 11 testiranih gljiva, sa najnižim minimalnim inhibitornim koncentracijama od 0.008 mg/ml,naFusarium semitectum. Proučavanje interakcija lipopeptidnih ekstrakata međusobno, kao i u kombinacijama sa etarskim uljima, ukazalo je na postojanje sinergističkog efekta za neke kombinacije u in vitro testiranjima. Kombinacija lipopeptidnog ekstrakta izolata SS-12.6 i ulja čubra na rast Alternaria alternata, kao i kombinacija ovog ekstrakta i ulja timijana u delovanju na Fusarium nygamai je ostvarila sinergistički efekat. U kombinaciji oba ulja sa ekstraktom SS-12.6 sinergistička aktivnost je jedino zabeležena na rast Fusarium solani. Do danas je pokazano da kombinacija komplementarnih bioloških pristupa sa aditivnim i/ili sinergističkim efektom može da obezbedi veću konzistenciju i efikasnost u biokontroli, pa u tom smislu postoji sve veće interesovanje za različite agense kao mogućoj zameni konvencionalnih sintetičkih fungicida u cilju zaštite kultivisanih biljaka od fitopatogenih gljiva.
