“…This unique case, however, should remind one of the possibility of malignancy in patients with regional enteritis. In agreement with other series [23, 25, 29], a retrospective analysis of the clinical features and actuarial survival of small bowel ‘Crohn’s’ carcinoma at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York [30]demonstrated that the diagnosis of cancer was made preoperatively only in 2 of 20 cases; according to the advanced stage of the malignant enteric tumors when ultimately discovered, prognosis and overall survival were poor. Small bowel ‘Crohn’s’ carcinoma should not only be suspected in patients with long-standing disease (with or without excluded bowel and/or multiple strictures) who present with a sudden change in symptomatology, but the possibility of cancer should also be considered in those in whom (sub)total obstruction fails to resolve with adequate therapy/decompression.…”

“…Predisposing diseases result in specific histological subtypes of TSI, e.g. malabsorptive diseases of the small intestine (gluten-sensitive enteropathy, idiopathic steatorrhoea and α-chain disease) and malignant lymphomas (Ellis, 1987), Crohn's disease and adenocarcinomas (Lightdale et al, 1975;Hoffman et al, 1977;Richards et al, 1989), familial polyposis syndromes and adenocarcinomas (Jagelman et al, 1988;Spigelman et al, 1989aSpigelman et al, , 1989b, immunosuppression or organ transplantation and malignant lymphomas (Penn, 1987).…”

“…In 1956, Ginzburg et al [9] reported a case of carcinoma of the jejunum in regional enteri tis; and the following year, Kornfeld et al [10] reported a second case in a patient with regional jejunitis. Since that time more than 52 cases of cancer of the small bowel have been reported in patients with Crohn's dis ease [11][12][13]. Approximately 33%, 17 cases, have occurred in excluded segments of bowel [14][15][16][17] of which 7 have been reported from Mount Sinai Hospital [18], The first case of carcinoma of the large intestine with Crohn's disease was described by Warren and Sommers [19] in 1948, 18 years before Crohn accepted that Crohn's dis ease could occur in a form confined to the large bowel.…”

“…[9,10] described the first two carcinomas of the jejunum. Since then, an additional 52 cases involving the small bowel have been reported [11][12][13]. [11] and Hoffman et al [ 12] have shown that the carcinomas of small bowel differ from those of de novo carcino ma.…”
