Adenocarcinomas of esophagus and cardia in comparison with gastric carcinoma

Abstract: Since the carcinomas of the cardia and the adenocarcinomas of the esophagus show many similarities in their histological and morphological descriptions, a detailed comparative study was attempted on the basis of 66 esophageal carcinomas in adenoid differentiation, 359 carcinomas of the cardia, 1288 gastric carcinomas in infracardial localisation, and 492 squamous carcinomas of the esophagus. The evaluation yielded no significant differences between the adenocarcinomas of the esophagus and the cardia neither in… Show more

“…These findings were compatible with those of the studies above-mentioned, suggesting that the germline variations in PSCA may be specific genetic markers for susceptibility to non-cardia GC development. A possible explanation is that cardia GC has different epidemiological characteristics, pathogenesis and clinical behaviors than non-cardia GC (26).…”

“…A statistically significant finding could be noted in intestinal-type but not in sporadic diffuse-type cancer (GG-plus-GA vs. AA). As is known, cardia-type gastric cancer differs from noncardia-type gastric cancer in etiology, pathology, carcinogenesis, and/or prognosis (Heidl et al, 1993;Kim et al, 2005;Saito et al, 2006), so is intestinal-type cancer versus sporadic diffuse-type cancer. It could be said that the indiscriminate combination of cardia-type and noncardia-type cases or intestinal-type and diffuse-type cases in the majority of eligible studies may mask or at least underestimate the strength of the real associations (Xue et al, 2010Cui et al, 2011).…”

“…adenocarcinoma of oesophago-gastric junction (Antonioli and Goldman, 1982;Meyers et al, 1987;Hesketh et al, 1989;Powell and McConkey, 1990;Blot et al, 1991;Pera et al, 1993;McKinney et al, 1995). Similarities in terms of histopathology and epidemiological trends have been identified (Kalish et al, 1984;Wang et al, 1986;MacDonald and MacDonald, 1987;Powell and McConkey, 1992;Heidl et al, 1993;Siewert and Stein, 1998) and have led some observers to consider the two cancers as one disease with similar aetiologies (Clark et al, 1994).…”
