Adenoendocrine carcinoma of the accessory papilla of the duodenum: Report of a case

Abstract: This report describes a very rare case of an adenoendocrine carcinoma of the accessory papilla of the duodenum. A 70-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital complaining of epigastralgia. Gastrointestinal endoscopy showed a protruding tumor with ulceration at the accessory papilla of the duodenum. “…According to this review, there were nine carcinoid tumors, four adenomas, three somatostatinomas, two gangliocytic paragangliomas, one adenomyoma, and only four adenocarcinomas [3][4][5][6]. According to a search of PubMed (http://www.pubmed.com performed on 15 March 2011 with keywords 'carcinoma' and 'minor duodenal papilla') only seven cases of carcinoma of the minor papilla have been reported [3,[5][6][7][8][9][10]. One of the reasons for the rarity of reports may be that patients have no characteristic symptoms when the tumor is in an early stage.…”

“…PD, which has been considered the standard procedure for patients with carcinoma of the duodenum [13], was performed for all previously reported cases of carcinoma of the minor duodenal papilla [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10] (Table 1). In patients with carcinoma of the papilla of Vater [14][15][16], the depth of cancer cell infiltration into the pancreatic parenchyma and the presence or absence of lymph node metastases will influence the prognosis of carcinoma of the minor duodenal papilla.…”
