Adenoviromics: Mining the Human Adenovirus Species D Genome

Abstract: Human adenovirus (HAdV) infections cause disease world-wide. Whole genome sequencing has now distinguished 90 distinct genotypes in 7 species (A-G). Over half of these 90 HAdVs fall within species D, with essentially all of the HAdV-D whole genome sequences generated in the last decade. Herein, we describe recent new findings made possible by mining of this expanded genome database, and propose future directions to elucidate new functional elements and new functions for previously known viral components.

“…The hypothesis is that the homologous recombination between two or among multi-types occurs in the gastrointestinal tract, where numerous diverse microorganisms live. There are hints that the bacterial Rec enzymes from E. coli enabled the recombination in immunocompromised individuals [ 28 , 29 ]. Multiple alignments of the current four species D types also revealed highly conserved sequences ( Figure 3 a and Figure 4 a).…”

“…HAdV-C seemingly codiverged with gorillas, chimpanzees, bonobos and humans, whereas HAdV-D viruses infect only humans (Hoppe et al 2015). The long-term coevolution of HAdV-D and humans is supported by the high variety of types within the species (Ismail et al 2018b;Kaján et al 2018), and their usually facultative pathogen nature.…”

“…The HAdVs are non‐enveloped viruses belonging to the Mastadenovirus genus of the Adenoviridae family. Based on the biological and genetic features, seven species (A‐G) of HAdV have been documented, which further divided into 90 types . Among seven species, HAdV‐F representing AdV‐ 40 and 41, and HAdV‐A representing AdV‐ 12, 18, and 31, are named enteric AdVs (EAdVs) based on tissue tropism and disease patterns that are associated mainly with the gastrointestinal tract .…”
