Adenoviruses Associated with Acute Respiratory Diseases Reported in Beijing from 2011 to 2013

Abstract: BackgroundAdenovirus is one of the most common causes of viral acute respiratory infections. To identify the types of human adenoviruses (HAdVs) causing respiratory illness in Beijing, a sentinel surveillance project on the viral aetiology of acute respiratory infection was initiated in 2011.Principal findingsThrough the surveillance project, 4617 cases of respiratory infections were identified during 2011-2013. Throat swabs (pharynx and tonsil secretions) were collected from all the patients, and 15 different… Show more

“…This subdivision has some clinical relevance, essentially because different hAdVs differ in tissue orientation and disease type. HAdV can cause multiple diseases, such as respiratory disease (hAdV‐B, ‐C, and ‐E), gastroenteritis (hAdV‐F and ‐G), keratoconjunctivitis (hAdV‐B and ‐D), and meningoencephalitis (hAdV‐A, ‐B, and ‐D) 59,63 . Therefore, effective and rapid diagnosis of hAdV ahead of its progression will provide for effective monitoring of hAdV infection and guarantee timely and effective treatment of hAdV‐associated diseases.…”

“…5, 6, 7, 8, 9 Ad14 was first identified in an outbreak of ARDs in 1955 and then vanished for a long period. 10 A newly emergent variant of Ad14, which was designated Ad14p1, has caused several outbreaks of acute febrile respiratory illness globally since 2006.…”
