Adiponectin and Adiponectin Receptors in Human Pheochromocytoma

Abstract: Aim: Recent studies have demonstrated that serum adiponectin and its receptors in adipose and muscle tissues are suppressed in diabetic or obese individuals. Patients with pheochromocytoma are frequently diabetic. Methods: Using real-time PCR, we examined mRNA expressions of adiponectin (Adp) and adiponectin receptor 1 (AdpR1) and AdpR2 in pheochromocytoma tissues from 49 patients. We also measured levels of serum total and high molecular weight (HMW) adiponectin levels in 10 pheochromocytomas and 33 normal vo… Show more

“…This association is independent of menopausal status and family history of breast cancer. This is in accordance with the result of a case-control investigating pheochromocytoma[20]. Higher HMW adiponectin level is also negatively associated with breast cancer in postmenopausal, negative family history of breast cancer or BMI> = 24.0 subgroup.…”

“…More importantly, for cancers, HMW adiponectin were three times higher in patients with pheochromocytoma than in controls, yet lower HMW adiponectin was an independent risk factor for worse hepatocellular carcinoma histological grades and HMW adiponectin was decreased in patients with metastatic renal cancer compared with those with localized one. The role of HMW adiponectin in breast cancer is also being actively investigated [20,23,24]. For example, in a hospital-based case-control study of 74 female breast cancer patients and 76 controls, HMW was shown to be strongly and inversely associated with breast cancer risk, independent of classical risk factors such as leptin and the IGF-1 system[25].…”

“…It is known that adiponectin has a favorable effect on insulin sensitivity and has anti-inflammatory and anti-atherosclerotic actions. Low adiponectin concentration is considered a risk factor of many complications of insulin resistance [18,20,50]. Dogruk Unal and co-authors showed that adiponectin level was significantly lower in SCS group of patients than those of the NFAI or control group [21].…”

“…Although catecholamines are metabolic regulators of adipose tissue, their effects on adiponectin remain unclear. Furthermore, the adiponectin levels of patients with pheochromocytoma are controversial, with reports of their being increased ( 4 ), decreased ( 5 ), or unchanged ( 6 ). To date, there are no studies investigating the relationship between the adiponectin levels and visceral fat area (VFA) in pheochromocytoma patients.…”
