Adjustable Gauge Stabilizer and Torque and Drag Reduction Tools Reduce Overall Drilling Times by at Least 20%: A Case Study

Abstract: Drilling more efficiently has always been an important consideration throughout the industry, but with the ever more complex and far reaching wells that are being drilled today, it has reached the stage of being a critical factor in the economic viability of many projects. This has lead to the development of many tools and techniques which have enhanced the overall process of drilling deviated wells and helped to realize significant savings in drilling time and improvements in well geometry. Two… Show more

“…A drill pipe bearing sub is affected by the wellbore quality and the installation number, resulting in a poor drag-reduction effect [13][14][15]. For instance, a hydraulic oscillator is limited by the high circulating pressure loss and the short service life.…”

“…e variable diameter stabilizer was designed, and its working mechanics were calculated [9,10]. e variable diameter stabilizer was developed and applied in the field [11,12]. In order to make the variable diameter stabilizer play a better role in the directional well, the variable diameter stabilizer was used in combination with the positive displacement motor, antiwear and antitorque tool [13][14][15].…”

“…The use of an adjustable stabilizer eliminates the need to trip the drill-string out and replaces the BHA when the build section or tangent section is completed. As a result, round trips can be saved with substantial savings in the drilling time and cost, as well as improvement on the well geometry (McCormick et al, 2011;Osmundsen et al, 2010).…”
