Adrenal Myelolipoma Simulating Virilizing Adrenal Tumor

Abstract: We describe a case of adrenal myelolipoma that simulated clinically and biochemically a virilizing adrenal tumor. The tumor was removed surgically. The preoperative diagnosis of adrenal myelolipoma can be made by the characteristic appearance on ultrasonography, computerized tomography and in equivocal cases by guided needle biopsy.

“…According to that theory, AML may be secondary to prolonged stress and continuous stimulation by adrenocorticotropic hormon and/or androgens or cortisol (which may be associated with endocrine disorders, such as hermaphrodism, Cushing's disease, Addison's disease or obesity of uncertain etiology, or may be exogenic by continuous administration of progesterone or other hormones) [12,[17][18][19][20].…”

“…They include Conn's syndrome and Cushing's syndrome, due to co-existing adrenal hyperplasia possibly combined to bilateral adrenal calcification [14,[17][18][19]. The endocrine activity may reside within the myelolipoma tissue, thus lending a functional component to it [19][20][21]. Foci of myelolipoma were identified within an aldosterone-producing adenoma [22].…”
