Adsorption–desorption behavior of the hydrophobically associating copolymer AM/APEG/C-18/SSS

Abstract: In this study, the acrylamide, allyl polyethylene-1000, octadecyl dimethyl allyl ammonium chloride, and sodium styrene sulfonate were chosen to synthesize a quadripolymer which with a hydrophobic association existed between molecules.

“…Its mechanism is chemisorption on the surface of the medium by electrostatic and hydrogen bonding forces, forming a stable monolayer feature [ 27 , 28 ]. For hydrophobically associating polymers, the free polymer solution molecules are entangled with the adsorbed polymer molecules due to association, which exhibits a multimolecular layer with increasing adsorption [ 29 , 30 ]. However, there are only a few reports on the adsorption mechanism of dendrimers.…”

“…The use of FTIR alone cannot give a complete description of the molecular structure of a polymer, hence it is used along with NMR for a complete characterization of the molecular configuration. This was the case when Quan et al (2019) characterized a hydrophobically associating polymers which was abbreviated as HPAAT. The polymer was synthesized from acrylamide (AM), allyl polyethylene-1000 (APEG), octadecyl dimethyl allyl ammonium chloride (DMDAAC-18) and sodium styrene sulfonate (SSS) using FTIR and 1 H-NMR spectroscopy.…”

“…Similarly, the adsorption of crude oil tends to reduce the tendency of polymer-rock interaction (Chiappa et al, 1999;Taheri-Shakib et al, 2019(a);Taheri-Shakib et al, 2019(b)). Quan et al (2019) reported the use of HAPAM polymers in the acidification process of carbonate rocks. The adsorption of the associative polymer was such that it forms a protective film on the carbonate rock.…”

“…However, the former has the shortcomings of large dosage and high price, the latter mainly reduces the acid-rock reaction through the method of adsorbed lm. Quan's [20][21][22] research group proposed that a retarding acid with low viscosity could be adsorbed on the surface of carbonate rock and form a hydrated lm that would delay the acid-rock reaction, but no published research has described a study of which factors could inuence the lm-forming properties.…”
