Adsorption of antitumor antibiotic doxorubicin on MCM-41-type silica surface

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the adsorption behavior of doxorubicin on MCM-41 silica, which was synthesized by templated sol-gel method, as a function of contact time, pH of solution, and drug equilibrium concentration. Experimental kinetic curves of adsorption were compared with theoretical models of Lagergren and Ho-McKay for pseudo-first-and pseudo-second-order processes. Equilibrium adsorption of doxorubicin was analyzed by Langmuir, Freundlich, RedlichPeterson, and Brunauer-Emmet-Teller isotherm … Show more

“…8), the state of protonation which depends on the pH of the medium. In saline medium (pH − 6.8), the DOX fraction with protonated amino groups is maximum (Roik et al 2017), at the same time, under these conditions, only non-ionized hydroxyl groups are available on the Fe3O4 surface (Warren 2013), which does not promote ion-ion interactions and correspondingly high sorption properties.…”

“…The mean amount of CIP adsorbed onto each 1 g of MCM-41 was 131 ± 5 mg that corresponded to 65 ± 2.5% adsorption efficiency. The adsorption of positively charged CIP onto negatively charged surface of MCM-41 [51] resulted in the change of zeta potential value from −12.02 ± 0.91 mV to 11.04 ± 0.04 mV for MCM-41 and MCM-41-CIP, respectively. The change of the surface zeta potential after drug adsorption onto the mesoporous silica is well-known phenomenon [52,53].…”
