We report a detailed study of the complexation of aromatic molecules and drugs with the surface of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs, the diameter and the length ranges are 0.5-2 nm and 1-5 lm, respectively) in terms of equilibrium binding constants, K. It is found that the binding constants have magnitudes of the order of 10 4 -10 5 M -1 and that there is some ligand specificity to the SWCNT surface depending on the structure of the aromatic molecule. The observed specificity is strongly governed by the curvature of the ligand chromophore and the type of side chains, resulting in the highest K for methylene blue which closely matches the curvature of the SWCNT surface. Stabilization of the drug-SWCNT complexes is found to be mainly due to intermolecular van der Waals forces and to a lesser extent by hydrophobic interactions. The approach suggested for determination of the binding parameters may be used as an alternative, or complementary, to standard Langmuir analysis.

" A synergistic effect for basic and acid dyes occurs in a binary dye system. t r a c tA multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) was used as an adsorbent for removal of a cationic dye (methylene blue, MB) and acid dye (acid red 183, AR183) from aqueous solution in single and binary dye systems. Characterization of the MWCNT and MWCNT-dye systems were performed using several techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), zeta potential and elemental analysis. Adsorption tests showed that the MWCNT presented higher adsorption of MB than AR183 in single and binary dye systems, revealing that p-p stacking is the main driving force responsible for the dye-MWCNT interaction. In single dye systems, the MWCNT presented the maximum adsorption capacities of MB and AR183 at 59.7 and 45.2 mg/g, respectively. In a binary dye system, a synergistic effect due to electronic attraction between MB and AR183 was found at low AR183 concentration (10 mg/L), which promotes the adsorption of both dyes on the MWCNT. However, MB adsorption could be reduced at higher AR183 concentration (>20 mg/L) due to a strong electrostatic attraction between MWCNT-AR183.

The aggregation and dispersion behaviors of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can regulate the environmental spread and fate of CNTs, as well as the organic pollutants adsorbed onto them. In this study, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were surface modified with humic acids from different sources and with surfactants of different ionic types. The dispersion stability of surface modified CNTs was observed by UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The effect of humic acid and surfactant dispersion on the adsorption of atrazine by CNTs was investigated by batch equilibrium experiments. Both humic acid and surfactant could effectively disperse MWNTs, but not SWNTs, into stable suspensions under the studied conditions. Surface modified CNTs had a greatly reduced capacity for adsorption of atrazine. The inhibitory effect of peat humic acid was relatively stronger than that of soil humic acid, but the two surfactants had a similar inhibitory effect on atrazine adsorption by the two CNT types. Increases in surfactant concentration resulted in rapid decreases in the adsorption of atrazine by CNTs when the surfactant concentration was less than 0.5 critical micelle concentration.
