Adsorption Removal of Inhibiting Compounds by Modified Activated Carbon

Abstract: Abstract:The effects of modification on the surface properties and inhibiting compounds (formic acid, acetic acid, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and furfural) removal performance of activate carbon (AC) were investigated. The raw and modified ACs were characterized, the result showed that the surface chemistries of the modified ACs were significant changed, but only the porous structure of modified by HNO 3 were slightly damaged, and the others no obvious change. The formic acid and acetic acid removal performance o… Show more

“…Other approaches for 5-HMF removal such as over-liming, activated carbon, zeolites and ion exchange resins selectively removed up to 85% of 5-HMF (Ezeji et al, 2007; Hodge et al, 2009; Jin et al, 2015; Ma et al, 2017). However, the recovery of 5-HMF from these extraction substrates is either difficult or unfavorable for downstream processing into 2,5-DMF due to high intramolecular attraction between 5-HMF and the extraction substrates or the regenerant/eluting agents containing water or water miscible organic solvents (Liu et al, 2015).…”

“…Figure (A) shows the chemical principle of this method, which is based on the functional groups present on the surface of the charcoal (carbonyls and carboxyl), which can form ionic bonds with the phenolic and furfural compounds present in the hydrolysates. However, this method depends on different variables, such as pH, temperature, contact time, and activated carbon . Hydrophobic resins and polymers, such as IRA‐400 (OH), XAD‐4, IRA‐400 (Cl) and IRA 958 (Cl), are also widely used for the removal of these compounds.…”

“…A significant advantage of activated carbon is that its use does not significantly change the amount of fermenting sugars obtained during the pretreatment [27]. Ma et al [28] investigated the possibility of using modified activated carbon to limit the amount of carboxylic acids and phenolic compounds. Zhang et al [29] evaluated the effect of the use of adsorption on activated carbon on the effective purification of the hydrolyzate from toxic compounds.…”
