Advanced Oxidation Protein Products and Carbonylated Proteins Levels in Endovascular and Open Repair of an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm: The Effect of Pre-, Intra-, and Postoperative Treatment

Abstract: Background. In recent years, a rapid increase in studies focusing on the role of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) has been observed. Oxidative modifications of proteins are infrequently evaluated in reference to AAA. Objectives. The intensity of oxidative protein modifications, presented as advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP) and carbonylated proteins (C=O), in AAA patients qualified for surgery was estimated. The effect of surgical techniques and intraoperative… Show more

“…Formation of OMP characterize by introduction of additional carbonyl groups into proteins. Carbonylation of proteins may be due to oxidation of side chains of some amino acid such as methionine, lysine and arginine or their interaction with ROS and non-oxidative reactions with oxidized lipids containing carbonyl groups [ 39 ]. Instead, we have also investigated the level of AOPPs in plasma and leukocytes, which are formed as a result of the reaction between chlorinated oxidants and proteins.…”

“…In an RCT with T2D individuals, administering carnosine as an antioxidant significantly reduced PCs vs. placebo [ 181 ]. PCs have also been shown to increase within 5–7 days post-operation, thus AOPPs and PCs may be observed after some time-lag of the original stimulus [ 245 ]. Thus, though there is less data compared to other OS markers, PCs constitute an interesting choice with clinical relevance, though the diversity of analytical methods impedes comparisons across studies.…”

“…This oxidative background can be reflected in the increased carbonylation in the TAA. In this sense, carbonylation is a marker of damage to amino acids such as lysine, methionine, and arginine, and also indicates the loss of disulfide bridges between the cysteines on the primary structure of the proteins by ROS [ 37 ]. At the same time, this contributes to endothelial dysfunction in the TAA.…”
