Advanced Soft Palate Cancer: The Clinical Importance of the Parapharyngeal Space

Abstract: The incidence of PPS recurrences is substantial in advanced-stage soft-palate cancer. PPS recurrences negatively impact survival; without effective salvage techniques for these recurrences or effective adjuvant therapy, poor patient outcomes can be expected.

“…In this regard, a large number of studies published in recent times have focused on primary radiation therapy as the modality of treatment for these cancers reporting consistently good outcomes 3, 13–16. However, some maintain that these cancers should be grouped together with oral cavity malignancies, and primary surgery should be performed for easily accessible, early‐stage disease 17–20. In the cohort reported here, the large majority of patients (81%) were treated with primary surgery, and almost two thirds of these resections were performed through a transoral approach.…”

El tratamiento de elección en los tumores de paladar blando durante años ha sido la radioterapia sola o combinada a quimioterapia [5].…”

“…Squamous cell carcinoma of the soft palate (SCCSP) is a relatively rare subtype of oropharyngeal cancer with an annual incidence of 240 to 576 new cases in the United States. 1,2 Any medical or surgical treatment involving the soft palate can significantly diminish quality of life due to disabling functional morbidities involving speech and swallowing. 3 Specifically, the soft palate is a dynamic structure with important roles in maintaining velopharyngeal competence, and disruption can cause functional debility.…”
