Advanced Train Location Simulator (ATLAS) for developing, testing and validating on-board railway location systems

Abstract: Purpose This article focuses on a novel Advanced Train LocAtion Simulator (ATLAS) for on-board railway location using wireless communication technologies, such as satellite navigation and location based systems. ATLAS allows the creation of multiple simulation environments providing a versatile tool for testing and assessing new train location services. This enhancement reduces the number of tests performed in real scenarios and trains, reducing the cost and development time of new location systems as well as … Show more

“…The exact location of a HST can be detected by track circuits, such as Eurobalises that use the magnetic transponding technology [44]. The location information can then be disseminated to all base stations by using various communications technologies, such as global system for mobile communications in railway (GSM-R), universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS), or satellite [45]. Assuming that the train's location is sent to a source base station at time t, the time that the control message carrying the train's location reaches the source base station is t + t trans + t prop , where t trans and t prop are the transmission and propagation delays for the control message, respectively.…”

“…Therefore, it is of high importance to identify challenges, potential factors, and effects of uncertainties which impact the location accuracy. In the following, five key elements which contribute to a vehicle's position error, including sensor hardware, environment, information sources, and positioning estimators, are explained [125,126].…”

“…The use of on-board satellite positioning systems in the projects listed is mainly focused on the objective of having a positioning solution suitable for Virtual Balise (VB) [26].The positioning solutions used to provide the VB usually generate a continuous Position, Velocity and Time (PVT) estimate. However, the VB solution requires only areas where the VB can be triggered and therefore only a spot positioning system is required.…”
