Advances in Cytokinesis Research. Cytokinesis in Budding Yeast: The Relationship between Actomyosin Ring Function and Septum Formation.

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Cytokinesis in budding yeast is accomplished by the concerted action of actomyosin ring function and septum formation. The actomyosin ring is not essential for cell viability, but it is required for efficient cell division. Deletion of the actomyosin ring results in abnormal septum formation, and a delay in cytokinesis and cell separation. In contrast, septum formation is essential for cell viability. Block of septum formation prevents the contraction, but not the formation of the actomyosin ring. He… Show more

“…Cytokinesis in S. cerevisiae is carried out by the coordinated actions of the actomyosin-based contractile ring and septum formation (Bi 2001;Finger 2005). Proteins involved in cytokinesis, such as Myo1, Iqg1, and Hof1, target to the bud neck in a septin-dependent manner (Bi et al 1998;Lippincott and Li 1998;Vallen et al 2000;Bi 2001;Gladfelter et al 2001b), but it is not clear how individual septins contribute to this targeting process.…”

Here, we showed that Iqg1 and Myo1 were delocalized or mislocalized from the bud neck in shs1D cells in spite of the presence of other septins at the bud neck.…”

“…In wild-type cells, newly synthesised cell wall material is deposited centripetally at the neck that separates mother cell and bud (bud neck) to form a septum. After cytokinesis, the septum is split down the middle allowing the cells to separate (6). Cytokinesis is delayed in vrp1D cells even at 24 8C.…”
