Advances in Numerical Modeling of Downhole Dynamics for Perforated Well Completions

Abstract: Perforation operations are an important part of the well completion process in many field developments today. However, there are two considerations paramount to such a design. First, the post-job well production rate depends critically on a complex system in which the formation, perforations, and wellbore are dynamically and nonlinearly coupled together. Second, perforating operations can place a large dynamic load on downhole equipment. Predicting the spatial loading and its transient behavior is an important… Show more

“…In extreme conditions, the explosive load may cause overall buckling of tube string and damage of downhole tools [1,2] including test equipment and packer, as shown in Figure 2. So, how to deal with the contradiction between the improvement of perforation efficiency and the safety of the tube string system becomes an urgent problem to be solved.…”

“…Some complex non-linear problems with high calculation accuracy have been solved with the premise of adapting to various complex mathematical models. The numerical simulation has many advantages and has become an effective means of piercing engineering analysis, in which the whole dynamic process can be presented by numerical simulation [26,27].…”

“…Over the past few years, several successful validations using high-speed gauge data and other experimental observations have been conducted (Schatz et al 1999and 2004, Schatz. 1992, Schatz et al1989, Bale et al 2014. A generic well configuration model used in the software is shown in Fig.…”
