Advances in Pharmacologic Stress Agents: Focus on Regadenoson

Abstract: Myocardial perfusion imaging using radionuclides is a wellestablished protocol for determining the diagnosis, prognosis, and management of coronary artery disease. Pharmacologic stress agents are used to induce cardiac hyperemia in patients unable to achieve the target workload by physical exercise alone. The vasodilators adenosine and dipyridamole are most commonly used, with dobutamine used only when these agents are contraindicated. However, because of frequent and intense side effects, as well as complex p… Show more

“…Comparative analysis of regadenoson and adenosine revealed excellent agreement between the two agents [23]. Additionally regadenoson applications include a simple injection which is well tolerated by patients with lower cost and do not require dose calculation according to the body weight or renal impairment [24]. Since both adenosine and dypiridamole infusions are time consuming and they both require monitorization, a simpler way of pharmacologic stress application is promising.…”

“…More recently, regadenoson (Lexiscan and Rapiscan) has been introduced. 91 It is simpler to use when compared with previous agents, being given as a bolus without a requirement for weight adjustment. Its safety in a large cohort of patients in the United Kingdom has recently been published.…”
