Advances in the management of the surgical complications for congenital cataract

Abstract: The greatest concern in children with cataracts is irreversible visual loss. The timing of congenital cataract surgery is critical for the visual rehabilitation. Cataract surgery in children remains complex and challenging. The incidence of complications during or after operation is higher in children than adults. Some complications could be avoided by meticulous attention to surgical technique and postoperative care, and others were caused by more exuberant inflammatory response associated with surgery on an … Show more

“…Studies suggest that secondary glaucoma tends to occur in cases with cataracts or follow cataract aspiration. Both glaucoma and cataracts require surgery in children, with both conditions representing complications of surgical intervention of the other complication . In the absence of clear information about the interaction of the conditions and the high likelihood of only detecting one eye disorder at a given point in time, we assumed independence of these eye defects and that both conditions result in equivalent morbidity .…”

“…As a treatable cause of visual handicap in childhood, pediatric cataract is a priority of the “VISION 2020 Global Initiative”[1]. The aim of pediatric cataract surgery is to provide and maintain a clear visual axis and a focused retinal image [2]. Proper management of pediatric cataract is crucial to the visual development and rehabilitation of affected children.…”

“…Besides, it makes possible the use of short needles (ie, 2.54 cm) and local infiltration anesthesia, unlike conventional methods, where the length of a needle is 45 mm 27. It allows using the block in operations where less deterioration in the surgery site is desired, such as ophthalmic surgeries 28. In our study, in addition to the analgesic effect, we wanted to achieve the effect of a stable depth of the anterior chamber and thereby create optimal conditions for the surgeon to work in the anterior segment of the eye.…”
