Advances in the treatment of chronic wounds: a patent review

Abstract: The aforementioned biological agents have different mechanisms of action, and considering the multifactorial pathogenesis of chronic wounds, they hold promise in treating chronic wounds. However, as administration of a certain biological agent may be beneficial in an early phase, it may slow down wound healing in a later phase. Basic and clinical research on chronic wound healing should therefore investigate the efficacy of these agents, alone and in concert, during the consecutive phases of wound healing.

“…Defective wound healing affects millions of people in the Western World and is a strong burden to patients and healthcare systems . Although there is a plethora of wound therapies available, challenges remain in the treatment of problematic wounds . Non‐healing wounds are known to display an imbalance in redox processes and inflammation, ultimately disturbing the sequence of events necessary for healing.…”

“…As a result, there is urgent need of novel therapies for these conditions. 22 Today, researchers are interested to study traditional systems of medicine to find remedies for the current medical issues. One of these systems is traditional Persian medicine, which is still being practiced in Iran.…”

“…45 Additionally, failed reepithelialization may perpetuate these processes. 46 Chronic wounds demonstrate a pathological level of underhealing. The use of stem cells in addressing these lesions is geared toward restoring the wound's ability to heal, either by supplanting ineffective healing mechanisms or by augmenting muted physiological processes.…”
