Advancing Graphitic Carbon Nitride-Based Photocatalysts toward Broadband Solar Energy Harvesting

Abstract: In recent years, increasing efforts have been devoted to widening the light response range of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) for photocatalytic environmental remediation and fuel production. To delineate the state-of-the-art and suggest future directions, we critically assess the recent reports on the design of broadband g-C 3 N 4 based photocatalysts for harvesting photons from ultraviolet to visible, and further to near-infrared (NIR). In this Review, we first introduce the fundamentals of g-C 3 N 4 ,… Show more

“…Secondly, apart from the common electron doping, other advanced modification techniques should be widely employed to further increase the photocatalytic efficiency of 2D/2D cocatalyst/g‐C 3 N 4 hybrids such as the facet and defect engineering, [ 289 ] localized plasmonic‐decoration technique, [ 290 ] single‐atom catalysis, [ 291 ] broadening light spectrum, [ 292 ] piezo‐phototronic effect, [ 293 ] and photothermal catalysis. [ 294 ] For instance, photo‐thermal catalysis with the capability of harvesting low‐energy infrared photons has gained tremendous attention as it can generate energetic hot electrons that can induce a thermal effect on the surroundings.…”

“…[22][23][24] Regarding the catalytic support materials, these spinel ferrite compounds have great potential in industry and technology as green heterogeneous catalysts in various organic functional group transformations and as catalytic supports. [25][26][27][28][29][30] Based on our interest in developing heterogeneous catalysts with the use of nanomaterials, we have recently reported the synthesis of novel heterogeneous catalytic supports that were functionalized by organic and inorganic ligands and complexes. 1,12,20,31,32 In the continuation of our studies, we wish to report the spinel normal SnFe 2 O 4 as a versatile nanomagnetic catalytic support, for the synthesis of a novel supported silica sulfuric acid catalyst, which is the rst report on the utilization of SnFe 2 O 4 MNPs as the catalytic support.…”
