The COVID-19 pandemic affected institution of higher learning as some teaching and learning activities had to halt due to safety of the students and staff. Face to face teaching was stopped, and lecturers had to find other methods of teaching. Online teaching was the only allowed method. The methods were synchronous and asynchronous. Lecturers have had to find innovative ways to practice effective teaching methods. Assessments had to also be done online taking important factors into consideration, following steps given by authorities. Background: In early 2020, a global pandemic (COVID-19) broke out and severely affected the progress of education in various countries’ universities and institutions, which promoted the progress of online courses at the same time. This article aims to conduct a comparative analysis of teacher-student surveys between online live teaching and traditional off-line teaching, and explore the direction of medical education reform in colleges and universities.Methods: Surveys among teachers and students were conducted on live broadcast courses and traditional offline courses by Guanghua School of Stomatology, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China. Teachers were investigated from the three aspects including preparation before the class, the experience of teaching during the class, and evaluation after the class, while the students were performed investigations and statistical analysis from the aspects of class experience, learning effect, evaluation of the teachers and curricula.Results: Both teachers and students fully recognized the orderly organization and management of online live-streaming teaching, and that online courses have a positive and powerful role in improving the quality of teaching. However, teachers and students agree that the overall teaching experience and learning effect of online courses are inferior to offline, so the traditional offline courses or the mixation of online and offline modes are tended for teaching.Conclusions: The effective and proper use of online education in stomatology can help improve teaching effect significantly, but it is impossible to replace the traditional classroom. In the future, with the addition of online teaching, stomatological education could adopt a new mode of the combination of online and offline teaching as well as the integration of inside and outside the classroom.

Introduction: The SWOC (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges) analysis of e-learning at Rawalpindi Medical University during the period of the COVID-19 pandemic was conducted. Methods: This cross-sectional survey-based study using a mixed quantitative and qualitative approach was conducted at Rawalpindi Medical University in June 2020 through an online survey. Data were collected electronically from 400 undergraduate medical students and faculty members using online Google forms. The study was carried out after obtaining ethical approval from the Institutional Review Board of Rawalpindi Medical University. Anonymity and confidentiality of data were maintained. Results: The salient features of e-learning at RMU was the establishment of prospect for remote learning in unprecedented circumstances and promotion of learner-centered, self-directed lifelong learning while the unavailability of internet and professional isolation was reported as a potential weakness, an opportunity provided by this platform was the introduction of blended learning programs and digital competence while potential challenges reported were conduction of valid, reliable and feasible e-assessment and strategies for teaching, learning, and assessment strategies for psychomotor and soft skills. Conclusion: In-depth analysis of e-learning during the midst of COVID-19 has made this evident that RMU is fully equipped and ready to cope up with any unforeseen event with regards to undergraduate medical education. There is startling need to develop infrastructure for long term sustainability and acceptability by availing opportunities, improving strength, and overcoming potential weaknesses and challenges.
