Adverse drug reactions due to cancer chemotherapy in a tertiary care teaching hospital

Abstract: Background: An adverse drug reaction (ADR) is defined by World Health Organization (WHO) as 'Any response to a drug which is noxious, unintended and occurs at doses used in man for prophylaxis, diagnosis or therapy'. ADRs associated with cancer chemotherapy warrant analysis on their severity and preventability. The outcome would create awareness among health care providers and prevent their recurrence. We have performed a hospital-based prospective observational study designed to analyze the pattern of ADRs to… Show more

“…In a similar study conducted by Julie Birdie Wahlang, Naranjo's causality assessment showed 86.7% possible (score 4) and 13.2% probable (score 5-6). 3 Like any other medical field, oncology health care team also needs a pharmacist who can provide their services for the better patient care. These services include comprehensive medication reviews integrating chemotherapy, supportive care and ambulatory treatment for co-morbidities, medication information for the medical staff and patients, therapeutic drug monitoring, support measures for pain management, chemotherapy side-effects prophylaxis and treatment, elaboration of therapeutic guidelines, optimal use of economic resources.…”

“…2 The drug regimen comprising doxorubicin, vincristine and cyclophosphamide, was associated with haematological disorders (8.4%) namely anaemia (mild anaemia to anaemia of grade 2 level), and febrile neutropenia. 3 Drug regimens have been designed to destroy maximum number of tumour cells by treating with Chemotherapy agents. These agents, cause DNA damage and disrupt DNA replication in proliferating cells.…”

“…Wahlang et al . found an AE incidence higher in men than in women, a difference they explained by a higher incidence of lung cancers (22.7%) in their study on an Indian population . The multivariate analysis showed that these determinants interact, since the molecules used, and the associations in chemotherapy protocols, are adapted to cancer location, stage and the patient's clinical state.…”

Finally, there is still a lack of information on SAEs among patients younger than 18 years or older than 85 years, and also on SAEs following targeted therapies or immunotherapy.…”

“…Namun kemoterapi dapat menyebabkan adverse drug reactions (ADRs). Beberapa ADRs yang dirasakan oleh pasien kanker di antaranya alopesia (rambut rontok), muntah, konstipasi, anoreksia, merasa lemah, anemia, dan sakit pada persendian (Wahlang et al, 2017). Efek obat yang tidak diinginkan sebaiknya diminimalkan.…”
