Adverse drug reactions to antiretroviral therapy (ART): an experience of spontaneous reporting and intensive monitoring from ART centre in India

Abstract: Prevalence of ADRs in intensively monitored patients was found to be 39.7%. Tuberculosis in HIV patients is an influential risk factor for occurrence of ADRs. With the increasing access to antiretrovirals in India, ADRs to antiretrovirals require monitoring and reporting.

“…On the other hand, when the effect was severe or persistent despite the symptomatic treatment a change of antiretroviral molecule was made. Similar results have been described in the literature [19,23,40]. We used the WHO causality score of adverse drug reactions to assess antiretroviral related causality.…”

“…In contrast, most of the previous studies result in higher prevalence of ADRs among female than male patients [17][18][19], however the observation support the result of higher prevalence rate of ADRs in age group 31-50 years of patients [17,20]. The results of ours study may be due to majority of the male patients in the current study.…”

“…Unfortunately adverse effects of these drugs are of serious concern. 6 The introduction of HAART has led to a signifi cant reduction in AIDS related morbidity and mortality. Unfortunately, up to 25% of all patients discontinue their initial HAART regimen because of treatment failure, toxic effects or noncompliance within the fi rst 8 months of therapy.…”
