Adverse Effects of Bisphenol A Exposure on Glucose Metabolism Regulation

Abstract: Bisphenol A (BPA) is used as basic chemical compound in the production of polycarbonate food containers or epoxy resins coating metallic cans for food and beverages conservation. Its xeno-estrogenic activity alters endocrine-metabolic pathways modulating glucose metabolism and increasing the risk of developing diabetes, insulin resistance, and obesity. Based on in vitro and in vivo experimental research, here we report some of the major BPA adverse effects on tissues that play a key role in the regulation on t… Show more

“…BPA has an important role in endocrine adipose tissue function by an effect on the secretion of leptin and adiponectin (Menale, Mita, Diano, & Diano, 2016). Leptin, a hormone produced by adipose cells, by influence on the central nervous system and hypothalamus, has a main role in regulating body weight.…”

“…Our results thus connect several crucial active metabolic pathways, identified in single myeloid lineages, while also displaying their unique combination for each lineage, as well as their inactivity in the other lineages. Direct usability for hematotoxicity studies is evident, as several xenobiotic compounds are known to selectively interact with specific metabolic pathways [101][102][103]. Likewise, elucidation of effects by endogenous compounds on hematopoiesis can also be achieved by usage of the here presented model, which may ultimately result in new therapy approaches.…”

“…The EDC with the biggest volume of production worldwide is BPA, with an emission rate of about 100 tons annually. Being the primary monomer in polycarbonate plastics, it is widely used and can enter the body orally and topically [17]. Various pieces of evidence suggest that BPA may be hazardous to human health, particularly for endocrine metabolism, including, but not limited to, glucose homeostasis [18][19][20].…”
