Adverse Reactions to β 2-Agonist Bronchodilators

Abstract: Beta 2-Agonists are safe and effective bronchodilator drugs. Their major adverse effects of skeletal muscle tremor, tachycardia and various metabolic effects are mediated by beta-adrenoceptor stimulation and are reversible. Skeletal muscle tremor is the most frequent dose-limiting side effect. It may be reduced by commencing treatment with a low dose and if it persists another beta 2-agonist may be tried. Other side effects such as cardiac arrhythmias and reduction in PaO2 are a serious potential problem in so… Show more

“…Since systemic β 2 -adrenoceptor stimulation may cause tachycardia and various metabolic effects,18 variables that reflect the effect of treatment on systemic β 2 -adrenoceptors are also presented, including plasma potassium, blood glucose, and the electrocardiogram (ECG)-derived QTc interval. Measurements of vital signs (pulse and blood pressure), ECG, plasma potassium, and blood glucose levels were made at baseline and at intervals during the treatment periods.…”

“…6 Generally, cardiac arrhythmias are not seen with selective b 2 -agonists. 11 Our case presented with sinus tachycardia, which resolved within 4 to 6 hours without any medication.…”

“…Cardiac side effects are more common following i.v. administration of ␤-adrenoceptor agonists (83). Cardiac arrhythmias are uncommon during inhalation of ␤ 2 -adrenoceptor agonists at recommended dose levels.…”

“…Laursen et al (77) observed an increased incidence of ventricular ectopic and supraventricular beats in patients receiving both types of drugs. ␤ 2 -Adrenoceptor agonists produce no serious central nervous system side effects (83). Nervousness may occur after oral or aerosol (high dose) administration (45,90).…”
