Aerobic biodegradation potential of endocrine‐disrupting chemicals in surface‐water sediment at Rocky Mountain National Park, USA

Abstract: Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in surface water and bed sediment threaten the structure and function of aquatic ecosystems. In natural, remote, and protected surface-water environments where contaminant releases are sporadic, contaminant biodegradation is a fundamental driver of exposure concentration, timing, duration, and, thus, EDC ecological risk. “…Water and sediment were collected from 16 surface‐water sites distributed throughout the park to cover primary stream inflows (Congaree River, Cedar Creek, Dry Creek, Myers Creek, Tom's Creek, Wateree River) at respective upstream park boundaries and a cross section of the principal hydrologic features (tributaries, wetland, oxbow lakes; Figure and Table , and Supplemental Data Figure S3 and Table S1).
