Aerodynamic Performance of Vertical and Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines: A Comparison Review

Abstract: The need for energy and electricity has been increasing globally, and this means more power is required from the power plants. Power plants, however, will then continue harming the earth because of the greenhouse gasses produced while generating energies that contribute to global warming. Using renewable sources to produce clean energies is one of the sustainable methods to deal with such challenges. Wind energy is one of the renewable sources, which is accessible anywhere on earth, creating green energy. Wind… Show more

“…A thorough understanding of the aerodynamics of traditional Darrieus turbine rotors can be obtained from a few studies, despite the paucity of detailed aerodynamic study [6] . The most often utilized airfoil is the symmetrical NACA, which comes in thicknesses ranging from 12% (NACA 0012) to 21% (NACA 0021) [7] . A vortex known as tip vortices can form at the ends of airfoils due to airflow moving from the bottom to the top due to a difference in air pressure between the airfoil's upper and bottom surfaces.…”

“…There are two types of wind turbines, namely Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines (HAWT) and Vertical Axis Wind turbines (VAWT) [11]. According to [12], VAWT has more advantages than HAWT. VAWT consists of several types with their respective performances based on Power Coefficient (𝐶 𝑃 ) graph, as shown in Figure 1.…”
