Hurricane Odile hit Baja California Sur, Mexico in 2014, causing substantial damage to local steel pole structures (light poles and electricity poles). Based on the failure characteristics observed on such poles, this paper develops an analytical study aimed at evaluating the wind-excited inelastic response of slender vertical cantilever structures. Displacement-controlled pushover analyses are performed in OpenSees. The research pretends to establish a reference of the deformation limit for the serviceability limit state in order to contribute to make conservative decisions in the design phase of steel poles.

Recently it has been proposed the study of a new class of bidimensional metamaterials, which have been called extensible pantographic sheets. Such bidimensional continua are the generalization of the continua introduced in as they take simultaneously into account the elastic energy in the extensional deformation and geodesic bending of constituting fibers. In the present paper we consider in the deformation energy a term accounting for the effect of shear deformation. The phenomena which we highlight can be of relevance to model the mechanical behavior of composite fiber reinforcements and of some lattices of beams constrained by internal pivots. We compare the effect of different linear or cubic shear stiffnesses i) on the deformation of pairs of pantographic sheets suitably interconnected and ii) on the deformation of pantographic sheets deformed under the action of forces concentrated on points.

In the present paper, a two-dimensional solid consisting of a linear elastic isotropic material, for which the deformation energy depends on the second gradient of the displacement, is considered. The strain energy is demonstrated to depend on 6 constitutive parameters: the 2 Lamé constants (λ and μ) and 4 more parameters (instead of 5 as it is in the 3D-case). Analytical solutions for classical problems such as heavy sheet, bending and flexure are provided. The idea is very simple: The solutions of the corresponding problem of first gradient classical case are imposed, and the corresponding forces, double forces and wedge forces are found. On the basis of such solutions, a method is outlined, which is able to identify the six constitutive parameters. Ideal (or Gedanken) experiments are designed in order to write equations having as unknowns the six constants and as known terms the values of suitable experimental measurements.Mathematics Subject Classification. 74B99 · 74Q15.
