Digital technologies have improved ways to perform aesthetic dentistry in the last few years. The aims of this survey were to investigate the most preferred way to preview the result of an aesthetic dental rehabilitation among a population of dental professionals and laypeople and to compare aesthetic standards of the general population and dentists in terms of the color of teeth for aesthetic dental rehabilitations. Patients and Methods: A questionnaire was sent to the subjects (dentists and laypeople) during a 1-year period and, together with their demographic data, different ways to preview the result of an aesthetic rehabilitation were submitted, such as digital smile design, dental wax-up and oral explanation. Furthermore, an additional section of the questionnaire investigated the most suitable color for an aesthetic rehabilitation based on the colors of the VITA Scale. Results were statistically analyzed (with Chi-square of independence and Mann-Whitney U-test) highlighting differences of answers based on age groups, educational attainment, gender, and belonging or not to the dental field. Results: Findings showed that digital smile design (digital preview) is a high-appreciated method for previewing and communicating with patients both by dental professionals and laypeople. Furthermore, lighter colors were found to be more valued by laypeople and significant differences were highlighted between the two populations assessed. Conclusion: It seems to be viable to use digital preview for dentists and laypeople to improve previewing and communicating ways. It might be advisable to better motivate patients in recognizing aesthetical features and to raise their awareness in preferring more mimetic aesthetic results. Great opportunities are opened up by digital smile design in teaching, learning, and routine practice.

Objective: To assess the self-perception of adolescents in conflict with the law about their concern with oral health, in addition to tracing their relationship with other related variables. Methods: A cross-sectional study involving male institutionalized adolescents in a city in southern Brazil who underwent clinical examination and interviews to understand their concern for their oral health and the relationship between this outcome and associated factors. Concern about oral health was obtained through a validated questionnaire. Two fitted models were performed using Poisson regression (α < 0.05). One of them used the decayed, missing, and filled teeth index (DMF-D), and another considered the components of this index as exploratory variables. Results: Sixty-eight adolescents were included, and a high occurrence (75%) of concern about their oral health was observed. In the final multivariate analysis that included DMFT, this index (prevalence ratio [PR]: 1.033; 95% confidence interval [95%CI]: 1.004 – 1.063) and concern about tooth color (PR: 2.208; 95%CI: 1.028 – 4.740) were significantly associated with oral health concerns. When the various index components were included in the multivariate model, only the number of decayed teeth (PR: 1.073; 95%CI: 1.007 – 1.144) and concerns about tooth color (PR: 2.250; 95%CI: 1.057 – 4.793) were associated with the outcome. Conclusion: Institutionalized adolescents are highly concerned about their oral health, being associated with a DMF index, especially the decayed component, and a concern with the color of their teeth.

Introduction: The concept of beauty, however a subjective issue, is overvalued in some societies, especially in Brazil. Beautiful people enjoy social advantages and are best evaluated for having positive characteristics. Objective: To quantify, by means of a questionnaire, the ability of interviewees, to evaluate / intuit / attribute specific characteristics to unknown people, starting from an observational point of view by means of different photos. Methods: Six different photos were designed for undergraduate students, each representing a smile with different aesthetic changes. Participants answered a questionnaire that contained 10 statements regarding emotional and social characteristics and, afterwards, scoring whether or not they agreed with each statement for each evaluated image. Results: A better evaluation was obtained of image considered having harmonic smile, while greater negative characteristics were attributed to smiles with aesthetic changes, such as fractures, diastema, unsatisfactory restorations, and color changes. Conclusion: According to this study, it can be concluded that dental aesthetics influence the evaluation and judgment of certain characteristics influencing on the emotional and social background. It is the duty of the dental surgeon to be attentive to this subjective step when facing unaestethic smiles, allowing a greater understanding the psycho-social context of the patient.
